Proverbs 2:8-9

Proverbs 2:8-9 "He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path."

This passage offers both paternal counsel and paternal promise.Solomon doesn’t offer his son only instruction; he offers him instruction with promise.By promising his son results if he followed his father’s instruction, Solomon was attaching purpose to the instruction. This wise parenting skill essentially provided a vision for his son to follow. If this young man listened to his father, accepted his father’s counsel, sought wisdom fervently and urgently, then he would get wisdom, knowledge and understanding. The promise provided an especially good reason to follow the counsel he was given. In this case, the promise was not just virtue; the promise was the awakening of God in his life. The person who passionately and sincerely seeks wisdom will open the door to God’s presence in his life. When the door is …

Proverbs 2:7 "He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly."

If Rehoboam did those things that his father suggested in the first four verses of chapter two, Solomon promised his son wisdom at the mouth of God.Solomon made this promise without hesitation because of personal experience.Inspired by the Holy Ghost, he elaborated on the promise in verse seven by identifying the wisdom as “sound wisdom.”This term would distinguish the wisdom God gives from the wisdom the world gives.Street smarts are not the same as “sound wisdom.”Intelligence is not the same as “sound wisdom.”The ability to negotiate or persuade is not the same as “sound wisdom.”There is a wisdom that descends from above and there is a wisdom that ascends from below. The wisdom that comes from the mouth of God is “sound wisdom” because it is wholesome and true. This heavenly wisdom is substantially different from worldly wisdom.James differentiates the two in the third cha…

Proverbs 2:5-6 "Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding."

Based on both inspiration and experience, Solomon promised his son results IF he were to do the things mentioned in the first four verses. IF he received his father’s words… IF he hid his father’s commandments in his heart… IF he cried after knowledge… IF he lifted up his voice for understanding… IF he sought understanding as silver… IF he searched for understanding as for hid treasures… THEN he would reap substantial benefit and blessing.
According to 1 Kings 3:3, Solomon “loved the LORD” and that verse also tells us that he walked in the “statutes of David his father.Solomon received his father’s words.Solomon hid his father’s commandments in his heart.Based on the proceeding conversation he would have with God in 1 Kings 3, it was clear that Solomon longed for knowledge and for understanding.Solomon soug…
